-
Butler County, Pennsylvania was formed on
March 12, 1800 when it's 502,400 acres severed from Allegheny County.
-
Butler County was named after Major General
Richard Butler.
-
Richard Butler was a native of Dublin,
Ireland, born on April 1, 1743, and immigrated to the United States in
1748. He and his four brothers -- Richard, William, Thomas, Pierce
and Edmund -- fought with George Washington at Valley Forge. After
the Revolution, Richard Butler settled in Carlisle and helped negotiate
treaties with the Indians. He received land grants from the state and
the federal government for his military service and was active in the
formation of Allegheny County. He was elected to the state's
General Assembly to represent Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
In 1788 he was named a major general, led an expedition into Ohio to
help with an Indian uprising, and was killed in the Battle of Miami.

The Poetry of Charles L. Cingolani
Born in Butler, PA
|
|
Hello Butler!
I just wanted to tell you that for the Butler Bicentennial, and especially for
Butlerites, I have written a series of poems dedicated to our hometown. My
name is Charles Cingolani of the BHS Class of 1950. I would like to invite you
to have a look at the 13 poems about Butler. Click in when you get a chance.
|
|
It was at Jefferson
and Main, the heart of town,
but offset,
as if to remind the Bank
of something,
that our clock stood proud
and solid, on cast iron...
